چکیده

This paper discusses the preliminary performance study of hybrid multithreaded execution model that combines software-controlled multithreaded system with hardware support for efficient context switching and threads scheduling. The hardware support for multithreading is augmented with a software thread scheduling technique called set scheduling, and their benefit to the overall performance is discussed. Set scheduling schedules multiple threads onto the hardware scheduler to minimize the software scheduling and context switching costs. An analytical model of the proposed multithreaded model is discussed and simulation results of processor utilization based on the proposed model are presented. Through simulation, we find that the hybrid multithreaded execution model results in high processor utilization than traditional softwarecontrolled multithreading.

Architectural Support for Multithreading on Reconfigurable Hardware

In this paper, we address organization and management of threads on a multithreading custom computing machine composed by a General Purpose Processor (GPP) and Reconfigurable Co-Processors. Our proposal to improve overall system performance is twofold. First, we provide architectural mechanisms to accelerate applications by supporting computationally intensive kernels with reconfigurable hardwa...

JMA: The Java-Multithreading Architecture for Embedded Processors

Embedded processors are increasingly deployed in applications requiring high performance with good real-time characteristics whilst being low power. Parallelism has to be extracted in order to improve the performance at an architectural level. Extracting instruction level parallelism requires extensive speculation which adds complexity and increases power consumption. Alternatively, parallelism...

Reconfigurable Multithreading Architectures: A Survey

This paper provides a survey on the existing proposals in the field of reconfigurable multithreading (ρMT) architectures. Until now, the reconfigurable architectures have been classified according to implementation or architectural criteria, but never based on their ρMT capabilities. More specifically, we identify reconfigurable architectures that provide implicit, explicit or no architectural ...

System Software Support for Reducing Memory Latency on Distributed Shared Memory Multiprocessors

This paper overviews results from our recent work on building customized system software support for Distributed Shared Memory Multiprocessors. The mechanisms and policies outlined in this paper are connected with a single conceptual thread: they all attempt to reduce the memory latency of parallel programs by optimizing critical system services, while hiding the complex architectural details o...
